Giving Back

It takes more than a village.

In 2015, Watson and his wife, Deborah, herself an award winning quilter, founded a nonprofit advocacy organization called Art for the life of Elephants (ALE) that pulls artists and writers together with one common mission: to raise money and awareness for the Elephant Crisis Fund and save the African Elephant.

IT TAKES ALL OF US.

The power of grass roots giving in support of hope. The hope that all life will one day be cherished and respected.

10% of the annual sales revenue of original artwork or limited edition prints from the Wildlife Collection are donated at the end of each year to the Wildlife Conservation Network (WCN) in San Francisco. In addition, any subscribed customer who chooses to buy art from the "Wildlife Collection" will receive a limited edition print of the artists choosing from that collection free of charge. WCN exists to ensure Conservationists have the Resources to Succeed.

"WCN is truly one of the most extraordinary organizations in the world". - Jane Goodall

All Art is a Gift.

Often artists are asked to donate their time and art to community events and fund raisers. The spirit of giving can work both ways. During a community open studio tour, Elephant in Green Grass and In Our Presence were gifted in exchange for direct contributions to the WCN Elephant Crisis Fund.

WCN gives clear choices for action. Over the past decade we have supported: The Niassa Lion Project, Save the Elephants, The Elephant Crisis Fund and the Cheetah Conservation Fund.

In Our Presence

The title says it all. In the shadow of us are the animals. Notice and be astonished. 20 thousand. That's the estimated number of wild lions left in the entire continent of Africa. There is much work on the ground to save them. The thing to understand is that all that work is about lions, is not about lions. It's about wilderness. Landscapes. People and wildlife together. Thriving.

In Our Presence|Gifted for Donation to Elephant Crisis Fund (2017)

A Run to Live By | Showing in September 2023 - Inspired by the world wide work of Dr. Laurie Marker in Namibia to save Cheetah populations.

Why Elephants? Extinction. Zoo relics. Not because of poaching, but because of what it would require to share space with them-an unprecedented level of global co-operation.

A trio. Who doesn't love a giraffe? Two school girls in an imaginary park in East Congo, DRC looking at three giraffes: "I'm glad. About what? That there are giraffes. When I grow up I want to live here. And take care of the animals? Just the giraffes. But I thought you said you wanted to be a teacher. That too. You can't do both. Well then, if not me who will take care of them. Somebody. A keeper of animals. A park ranger? Yes, maybe I'll be a park ranger." (Chapter 48 pg. 377 | Mercy in Masquerade| Gary Watson.)

Gallery support is crucial to artists. It takes a community to support art, but individuals to step up and create the space necessary for them to show.

If nothing else, give time ... everyone can do that.

Mercy in Masquerade is a work of fiction based on real events and was inspired by the work of a very special human being, Dr, James Orbinski. It took three years to write, one-third of a decade, an effort pales in comparison to sacrifices made by Dr. Orbinski over the course of his life. He accepted the 1999 Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of Doctors without Borders as their President and was a field doctor during Somalia Famine and the Rwandan genocide.

Alzheimer's

Speaking out. Storytelling is an art form of connection. Everyone can do it. Leaving the Bones Behind was shaped by a belief that radical new approaches in neurological science are required to tackle the ever-increasing day-to-day impact of Alzheimer's.
WCN's mission is to protect endangered wildlife by supporting conservationists who ensure wildlife and people coexist and thrive.

Thought provoking twist on the ravages of Alzheimer’s disease, the ethical dilemmas inherent in scientific advances, and the search for a dignified space in-between.

There will be 32 million people in the United States over the age of 80 ... and half will have alzheimer's ... and 16 million otherwise healthy individuals will be side-lined as caregivers.
